What is the nature of water?
- Change
- Movement
- Alchemy
- Gentle
- Healing
- Purifying
- Strength
- Stimulating
- Violent
Water evaporates, condenses, and freezes and yet retains its basic structure. Through the forms water takes, it can be gentle as a trickling brook and even in this gentleness be strong enough to errode and dissolve rock, over time. Water can be as forceful and violent as a raging waterfall, a flood, or storm at sea.
Life is centered around water. The primary consideration in feng shui for locating towns, villages and individual homes is proximity to water. Water of course to drink, but also to grow crops, wash and provide means for transporting goods. Water has a special spiritual significance as well. It represents rebirth and purification. Water in some places is believed to have healing properties and people make pilgrimages to them.
When you consider that our bodies are 85% water, it is not surprising at all that water would play such an important role in our lives. Physically, we would not survive for very long without water. We need a balance of water in our atmosphere because when the climate is either too dry or too humid we feel discomfort. Places that have a high level of humidity have a high level of negative ions, which is why most of us tend to feel healthier when we are near sources of water such as a lake, or the ocean.
There are some 25,000 ions per cubic centimeter near a waterfall, and typically only 250-500 ions per cubic centimeter in homes and offices.
Exercise
Here are some ideas you can use in your home and office utilizing water that will make your environment feel more comfortable and balanced.
1. Generate Negative Ions in your Home and/or Office
Most homes and offices have too many positive ions. They are created by synthetic materials (building materials, synthetic fibres) and static build up, heating and air conditioning units and fumes, dust, and certain cooking fumes. Car exhaust enters our homes through open windows. The off-gassing and fumes from factories may enter our homes or be in your workplace. The effect of these pollutants is to displace the natural negative ions that create feelings of good health.
We can reduce the positive ions and create more balance by:
- adding plants to your home and/or office. Many plants create negative ions. Ferns are particularly good.
- wiping down surfaces. This create moisture in the air, and reduces static building up.
- misting a room with a spray bottle. A fine mist of spray is wonderful, especially in the winter when windows are closed and heating creates dry air. You can use ordinary tap water or distilled water and if you choose, you can add essential oils to the water.
- setting up a home fountain
- getting an Ionizer air purification
2. Celebrate and give Gratitude to water in all its different forms:
- Drink water with awareness and gratitude
- Walk on dew drenched grass
- Sit next to a waterfall
- Listen to the rain
- Walk in the surf
- Play in the snow
- Go swimming
- Take a sauna
- Take a bath
