Day 29 The Power of Style

Day 29 Feng Shui Life Make-Over

by Deborah Redfern, Feng Shui Studies

In my work as a feng shui consultant I am always struck by the individuality and unique expression in the homes I visit. Every home is actually a work of art – regardless of whether it is a simple cottage or a grand estate, how aesthetically beautiful it is or even how austere. Each one is a story unto itself and a declaration of personal expression about the people who created it.

You may not consciously be aware of what makes you different and unique from everyone else — but through your personal style, you broadcast it at all times. You can’t do anything but! Everything you like and dislike, everything you own, says something about who you are. Your possessions allow you to express your creativity and give your life value and meaning. The objects that surround you are windows through which your soul looks out.

Your personal style can be found in your ‘favorites’ list:

  • favourite location for a home
  • the kind of house you admire
  • the colours you prefer
  • the furniture styles you are drawn to
  • the kind of accessories you choose
  • the artwork you have chosen
  • what sort of window coverings you prefer
  • favourite type of lighting
  • texture you prefer (smooth, rough, shiny)
  • what kind of clothes you like
  • favourite foods and beverages
  • the music you prefer
  • the movies you watch

Exercise for Day 29

Today we are going to play with metaphors. With the above list in mind, look at the items you have in your home.  ask yourself: “If this represented something about me and my life, what would it be?” Let the answers come to you without trying to force answers - what you think they should be logically.

The purpose of this exercise is to peer through the window of your soul to see where you are in relation to your hopes and dreams for your life: your overall, long term hopes and dreams as well as more immediate goals. Because the objects we choose do tell a story, it can be fascinating to let the object we have chosen do the talking.  We can find that we are exactly where we want to be, or that there are some adjustments and refinements we can make in our surroundings that will help support us in our life.
