Introduction

Welcome to this course on Feng Shui Foundations. Whether you are learning to be a feng shui practitioner, are already a practitioner and doing a refresher, or are taking this course for your own interest, you will benefit from the perspective this course offers.

In a nutshell, feng shui is the study of how our lives are affected by our living and working spaces. And in the simplest of terms, a feng shui expert is someone who works with people who have identified ‘something out of balance’ or something not working in their home or work space, and who is trained to identify and recommend the remedies to resolve issues related to an imbalance.

Now, what makes an expert? Certainly there are tools, rules and formulas, some of which you will be learning in this course, but I believe that the ability to listen with all senses, which means hearing both what is said, and what is left unsaid, as well as the ability to focus on the energy of a space is what makes a feng shui practitioner an expert.

I love to look at things from all angles, so rather than focusing on what we have to offer as feng shui practitioners, why don’t we look at it from the client’s point of view? What are some of the reasons people want to get a feng shui practitioner to advise them on their home?

  • They are people who are aware of how their surroundings affect them and they want to consciously change and design their environment in a specific way in order to improve their lives.
  • They’ve heard or read that a certain feature in a home is ‘bad’ and they’ve just realized that they have that scenario in their own home. They are worried about the possible negative consequences of this and want to remedy it.
  • They have experienced a majour change in their life, usually a change for the worse, but positive change can also be overwheming.
  • They need help with colour and decorating, but with an energetic perspective rather than a purely decorative or fashion viewpoint.
  • Something in their home doesn’t feel right. They may or may not know what it is, but they don’t know what to do about it.

What You Are Going to Learn

In this course you will get a firm foundation for understanding the foundation of feng shui. You will be focusing on a fairly universal feng shui that you can use without needing to use specific tools such as the bagua map and/or five elements.

Much of feng shui principles are common sense, so much so that most cultures and traditions throughout the world have the same principles embedded in their society. Other principles may not be ‘common sense’ until you understand the reasoning behind them.

This course focuses on a generic feng shui. The underlying commonalities are such that you can put them into use immediately. Our subjects are:

  1. An overview and history of feng shui so that you can see how it developed and changed over time.
  2. The different types and schools of feng shui.
  3. Principles of Chi and Yin and Yang, the basic building blocks to understanding how to work with the energy of our surroundings.
  4. Landscape feng shui principles, the timeless and practical ways to determine the most optimal positions for interior and exteriors, including layouts, shapes and proportions, colours and design features.
  5. Feng Shui remedies: The theory behind what ‘cures’ to use, when to use them, and why they work.
  6. Green Feng Shui: an insightful discussion of home safety and ecology including air quality, water quality, home building materials, and electromagnetic fields.
  7. Conquering clutter: an interesting ‘modern’ home concern is simply having too much, which brings feelings of overwhelm and anxiety.
